In Year 1 we aim to support children in becoming happy, confident, curious and creative individuals who have a passion for learning. We believe that learning should be fun and strive to provide activities and resources that not only support children's learning but help to develop children's enthusiasm for the curriculum. Play is a big part of our curriculum in Year 1 and it is through play that children learn to be independent thinkers and inventors. We provide resources and activities within the environment which children can explore and engage in their own terms and this allows them to become good communicators and masters of their own learning.
This term Year 1 have been exploring the topic Towers, Tunnels and Turrets. In History, the children have been looking at a variety of different castles and have enjoyed thinking about the features a castle needs such as a drawbridge, moat and towers. They have designed, labelled and then built castles using a variety of resources around the classroom and have also enjoyed working collaboratively to create an escape tunnel.
In Science the children enjoyed exploring a variety of materials and their properties and were given the task of creating a new castle for Percy the knight. In order to find the best material for Percy's new roof the children carried out an experiment to test different materials to find the most waterproof. As you can guess it was a very wet challenge!!
In English the children have been learning the story Rapunzel and have been busy creating story maps and using puppets to retell the story. They have learnt about adjectives and how they are used to describe objects, people and places and were very inventive in thinking of adjectives to describe the witch in the story. The children also had a special visit from the witch!!
In Maths the children have been learning how to represent numbers in different ways. They have been doing this using objects, numerals and have also been learning to spell and write the number words to twenty.
The Animal Man visited our school and the Year 1 children thoroughly enjoyed the experience of learning about different animals and having the opportunity to stroke and hold the animals.
